Detroit Launches Road Repairs on 200 Miles Across 15 Neighborhoods This August

The Detroit mayor's office released the phased schedule for the 2026 Road and Bridge Repair Program on July 7. The plan directs crews to begin work on 200 miles of local streets in 15 neighborhoods, with the first sites activated on August 15.
City budget documents approved by the council in May allocate resources from the capital improvement plan for this effort. The timing follows the close of the prior fiscal year and coincides with lower school-related traffic volumes across the city.
Changes for Residents in Daily Travel and Services
Detroit households in areas such as the East Side and near 8 Mile Road will face temporary lane closures and rerouted bus stops operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation. The program documentation lists priority for streets with the highest volume of 2025 service requests logged through the 311 system.
Local delivery drivers and shift workers can expect added travel time on affected corridors during the initial 60 days of each segment. Property owners along the routes will receive mailed notices 14 days before work begins at their block.
The 2026 capital improvement plan states an $85 million first-phase total for resurfacing materials, equipment, and contracted crews. City records show this amount covers 85 separate street segments identified through pavement condition surveys completed in March.
Remaining Phases and Evaluation Dates
Subsequent phases are projected to launch in October and January 2027, according to the published timeline. The government says final inspections for the August segments will occur six months after each project concludes to confirm surface durability under winter conditions.
